The second string (phenomenology) revolution
نویسنده
چکیده
In the past three years our views on how the standard model of particle physics could be embedded into string theory have dramatically changed. The heterotic string is no longer the only possibility for such an embedding and other perturbative (or non-perturbative) corners of M-theory, like Type I or Type II strings seem now possible. It has also been realized that the string scale Ms is not necessary close to the Planck scale and could be much smaller, of order the intermediate scale √ MWMp or even close to the weak scale. In addition, semi-realistic three generation models have recently been constructed starting with Type IIB compact orientifolds. I briefly discuss some of these developements which represent a revolution in our understanding of string phenomenology. To appear in the proceedings of Strings 99

Topics in String Phenomenology
We consider two questions in string “phenomenology.” First, are there any generic string predictions? Second, are there any general lessons which string theory suggests for thinking about low energy models, particularly in the framework of supersymmetry? Among the topics we consider are the squark and slepton spectrum, flavor symmetries, discrete symmetries including CP , and Peccei-Quinn symme...
متن کاملon String Phenomenology ∗
These lectures present some topics of string phenomenology and contain two parts. In the first part, I review the possibility of lowering the string scale in the TeV region, that provides a theoretical framework for solving the mass hierarchy problem and unifying all interactions. The apparent weakness of gravity can then be accounted by the existence of large internal dimensions, in the sub-mi...

متن کاملFree Fermionic Heterotic Model Building and Root Systems
We consider an alternative derivation of the GSO Projection in the free fermionic construction of the weakly coupled heterotic string in terms of root systems, as well as the interpretation of the GSO Projection in this picture. We then present an algorithm to systematically and efficiently generate input sets (i.e., basic vectors) in order to study Landscape statistics with minimal computation...

Recent developments in string theory have important implications for cosmology. Topics discussed here are inflation, the cosmological constant, smoothing of cosmological singularities, and dark matter from parallel universes.
